The "Drop Out" Effect

Over the years a lot of players have suggested that the way to win a particularly hard event is to finish it in last place several times.  My experience has been that this is not necessary, since the RR3 algorithm often drops the best racers from the next running of the same event.  Put another way, you don't have to get better, the competition will get worse. 
Here's a good example from the new Audi LS.  I thought I had improved from 4th to 3rd with better driving but, as you can see, I ran it in exactly the same time.  My position improvement was solely due to the "drop out" effect.

What's interesting is that "JimBling" stayed in and had a better time, but the algorthrim didn't offer 2 additional bots who could run it in under 5:00 so I got the 3rd place I needed to advance to the next tier.
